Information School Convocation 2019

[ CHEERING ] [ CLAPPING ] PLEASE BE SEATED EVERYONE. GOOD AFTERNOON. MY NAME IS ANIND DEY. I AM THE DEAN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON INFORMATION SCHOOL. IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE 2019 INFORMATION SCHOOL CONVOCATION. PLEASE JOIN ME IN GIVING A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO THE INFORMATION SCHOOL CLASS OF 2019. [ CHEERING ] [ APPLAUSE ] I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU HERE TODAY WHO ARE HERE TO SUPPORT OUR GRADUATES. I WANT TO THANK THOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILIES JOINING OUR FESTIVITIES LIVE STREAMING FROM AROUND THE WORLD AS WELL. AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN A GRADUATE, HIMSELF, SEVERAL TIMES I ASSURE YOU YOUR SUPPORT MEANS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY AND THROUGHOUT THESE MANY MONTHS AND YEARS. WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THE PEOPLE THAT HELPED YOU MAKE OUR STUDENTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS TODAY POSSIBLE. PLEASE JOIN ME IN GIVING A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO WELCOME AND RECOGNIZE THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN PART OF YOUR ACADEMIC JOURNEY. [APPLAUSE] I HOPE THAT MANY OF YOU IN OUR AUDIENCE WERE ABLE TO ATTEND OUR CAPSTONE EVENT ON TUESDAY. IT WAS ONE OF OUR BEST EVER. WE HAD 168 CAPSTONES BEING PRESENTED BY 435 CAPSTONE STUDENTS FROM ACROSS OUR DEGREES IN INFORMATICS, LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES, AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT. STUDENTS, THANK YOU FOR POURING YOUR PASSION AND SKILLS INTO YOUR PROJECTS. I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AND RECEIVED WONDERFUL FEEDBACK FROM OUR JUDGES, SPONSORS, ALUMNI AND FACULTY. I HOPE YOU WILL COME BACK NEXT YEAR AND IN FUTURE YEARS TO CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR FUTURE CLASSES. RECONNECT WITH YOUR FACULTY AND FRIENDS AND EVEN SPONSOR CAPSTONES OF YOUR OWN. ONE OF MY FAVORITE ASPECTS OF CAPSTONE IS THAT IT SHOWCASES OUR SCHOOLS SENSE OF COMMUNITY. I SAW TEAMS WORKING SEAMLESSLY TOGETHER. CLASSMATES SUPPORTING EACH OTHER. STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT PROGRAMS OF LEARNING ABOUT EACH OTHER'S INTERESTS AND STRENGTHS AREA LIKE TODAY IT IS A MOMENT WHEN WE CAN ALL COME TOGETHER. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE MOMENTS LIKE WE DO TODAY. ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR. THIS WAS A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR MANY OF US IN THIS ROOM, AND AROUND THE WORLD. WE WEATHERED TRAGEDIES, INJUSTICES AND DIVISIVENESS. DURING THESE DIFFICULT MOMENTS, I TAKE SOLACE IN BEING PART OF A COMMUNITY . NOT ONLY DO WE SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE EACH OTHER, BUT WE ARE COLLECTIVELY, A NETWORK OF CHANGEMAKERS. PEOPLE WHO KNOW THAT INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY CAN CHANGE LIVES, AND PEOPLE WITH A DRIVE AND EXPERTISE TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD AROUND US. THIS YEAR ALONE ISCHOOL STUDENTS AND FACULTY HAVE DONE INCREDIBLE WORK IN WIELDING INFORMATION TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE WORLD. INCLUDING PHD STUDENT, WHO STUDIED THE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ARTIFACTS AVAILABLE IN LIBRARIES SUCH AS ANIME, GRAPHIC NOVELS ON VIDEO GAMES. SHE STUDY HOW PEOPLE USE THIS WIDE VARIETY OF MULTIMEDIA TO SATISFY THEIR INFORMATION NEEDS TO IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL SEARCH EXPERIENCES. A PHD STUDENT TO STUDY THE WAY THE PEOPLE WITH CONDITIONS SUCH AS CEREBRAL PALSY, PARKINSON'S DISEASE CAN USE TOUCH SCREEN DEVICES. MODELS THOUGH INTERNET ACTIONS THAT DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO USE THOSE DEVICES. CAPSTONE PROJECTS THAT HELP VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TO OBTAIN HOUSING. THAT HELP INDIVIDUALS UNDERSTAND THE EXPERIENCES OF TEENAGERS LIVING WITH OFTEN INVISIBLE CHRONIC DISEASES. AT THAT HELP TO EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE FAKE NEWS. OUR STUDENTS ARE INNOVATORS. THEY ARE PROBLEM SOLVERS. THEY ARE LEADERS. THEY PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. BEFORE I STEP AWAY, HAVE ONE WORD OF ADVICE FOR OUR GRADUATES. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO REFLECT ON YOUR JOURNEY TO THIS MOMENT TODAY. PERSONALLY, I FIND THAT I OFTEN FIXATE ON THE THINGS THAT HOLD ME BACK AND FAILED TO RECOGNIZE THOSE THAT LIFT ME UP. NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE HELPED TO MAKE YOUR SUCCESS POSSIBLE. YOUR FAMILY, YOUR CLASSMATES , YOUR FACULTY. THINK ABOUT THOSE THAT OPENED DOORS FOR YOU RATHER THAN THOSE THAT CLOSE THEM. AS YOU MOVE FORWARD IN YOUR LIVES AND CAREERS, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO FIND WAYS TO ENABLE SUCCESS OF THOSE AROUND YOU. OFFER WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO A COLLEAGUE. SUPPORT A SCHOLARSHIP. BE A MENTOR. FOR EACH OF YOU, THIS CONVOCATION AND AWARDING OF YOUR DEGREE REPRESENTS A MILESTONE IN YOUR PERSONAL ASPIRATIONS AND GROWTH. THIS IS THE REWARD FOR YOUR HARD WORK ON THE RAW MATERIAL FOR YOUR FUTURE SUCCESSES. THE FACULTY AND STAFF, YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. CONGRATULATIONS FROM ALL OF US! [APPLAUSE] TODAY, IN JUST A FEW HOURS, ALL OF YOU JOIN AN ALUMNI COMMUNITY OF PEERS THAT ARE DOING AMAZING THINGS FOR THEIR INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITIES. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU ACCOMPLISH NEXT. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU. THIS STUDENT WAS NOMINATED FOR HER LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, AND ACADEMIC ABILITY. WHILE AT THE iSCHOOL, SHE HAS SERVED AS A LEADER IN MULTIPLE ORGANIZATIONS. BECAUSE SHE EMBODIES THE FUTURE OF LIS, IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE THE ONLINE WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S 21ST CENTURY AWARD: ELISA RODRIGUES. [CHEERING] [APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE] CONGRATULATIONS ELISA! [APPLAUSE] OUR RESIDENTIAL RECIPIENT WAS NOMINATED FOR HER COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND EQUITY, EXCELLENT WORK ETHIC, AND PASSION FOR LIBRARIES. IN THE END WE CHOSE THIS STUDENT BECAUSE OF HIS INVOLVEMENT WITHIN THE ISCHOOL AND HIS OWN COMMUNITY. THIS STUDENT IS ENCOURAGING AND SUPPORTING HIS PEERS. WHETHER THROUGH MENTORING STUDENTS, CRACKING JOKES, OR WRITING INSPIRATIONAL MEDIA ARTICLES. HE IS INTERESTED IN DATA SCIENCE, INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE, AND INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND CYBER SECURITY. DESPITE HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROFESSIONAL INDUSTRY, IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY, AS ANIND DEY -- IUGA DIRECTOR BUT HIS FAVORITE ASPECT HAS BEEN SEEING EVERYONE GROW FROM FIRST-YEAR ORIENTATION TO CAPSTONE. NADIA IS THE INCOMING PRESIDENT OF AIMS AND IS CONCENTRATING HER STUDIES ON BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE. [APPLAUSE] >>I REMEMBER MY FIRST DAY AT ISCHOOL ABOUT NINE MONTHS AGO. I WAS EXCITED TO BE ONE OF THE CHOSEN FEW, AND A BIT OVERWHELMED AS I WONDERED WHAT I WAS GETTING MYSELF INTO. BUT TODAY, I FIND IT ON HER TO BE PART OF A SCHOOL THAT ENCOURAGES EACH ONE OF US TO EMBRACE INNOVATION AND CHANGE, TO BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF OURSELVES AND ALSO INFORMATION LEADERS THE WORLD NEEDS MORE OF. TRUTH BE TOLD, OUR EXPERIENCES WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME IF IT WEREN'T FOR SUCH A COOPERATIVE AND SUPPORTIVE COHORT AS A SECOND YEAR STUDENT. AS A FIRST YEAR STUDENT I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL ON BEHALF OF MY CORHORT FOR BEING SUCH AMAZING, INSPIRING SENIORS WHO WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ENSURE THAT WE FOUND OUR WAY IN THE UNIVERSITY. [APPLAUSE] THE WINNER OF THE ARCHER AWARD HAS BEEN DESCRIBED BY HER PEERS AS AN EMPOWERING LEADER WHO GOES OUT OF HER WAY TO PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT THUS ELEVATING HER PEERS. SHE NOT ONLY EXECUTED EFFECTIVELY IN HER COMMUNITY BUT HAS WORKED HARD TO ENSURE SHE WAS SEEKING INPUT FROM EVERYONE. IN ADDITION TO HER KINDNESS OVER THE PAST YEAR, SHE PROMPTLY TAKES ON PROJECTS AND ADDITIONAL WORK WITH POSITIVITY AND RESILIENCE. I CALL ON STAGE THE WINNER OF THE ARCHER AWARD, HAE YUNG QING. DOC MARTIN, WHO LED BOTH STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS, SAID OF MANDI: "AFTER A LONG AND EXHAUSTING BUT REWARDING DAY OF LEARNING ABOUT CULTURES THAT WERE NOT HER OWN, MANDI WOULD 'RALLY THE TROOPS' FOR AN EVENING ADVENTURE THAT WOULD EXTEND BOTH THE LEARNING AND THE FUN. I THINK MANDI SHOULD GO ON EVERY FACULTY MEMBER'S STUDY ABROAD; THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE IS BRIGHTER WITH MANDI A PART OF IT." IN THE iSCHOOL, MANDI SERVED STUDENTS BY WORKING AS A PEER ADVISOR IN 2018, HELPING FOLKS FIND THEIR OWN PATHS THROUGH THE PROGRAM. MANDI ALSO COMPLETED HER CAPSTONE A YEAR EARLY WITH A TEAM OF 2 OTHER ONLINE iSCHOOL AND STUDY ABROAD COLLEAGUES. THEIR CAPSTONE, CALLED "CHILDREN CHOOSE," ESTABLISHED CHILDREN'S ADVISORY BOARDS IN THREE DIFFERENT SITES ACROSS THE NATION AND ASSESSED HOW CHILDREN'S PARTICIPATION IN THIS LEADERSHIP CAPACITY CAN INFORM FUTURE LIBRARY PROGRAMMING AND COLLECTIONS. SHE EPITOMIZES AND EMBODIES THE VALUES OF THE UW IN HER STAND FOR DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION, AND SHE EPITOMIZES AND EMBODIES A TRUE GIFT FOR LEADERSHIP. ALTHOUGH A LITTLE QUIET, MAYBE EVEN A BIT SHY, KATIE IS A GIANT AMONG MANY WHO ARE LARGER AND LOUDER THAN SHE. HER DEMEANOR IS ONE OF RESPECT, LISTENING AND LEARNING. HER DEMEANOR NEVER SAYS, "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!" RATHER, SHE PREFERS TO SHIFT THE ATTENTION TO OTHERS WHILE GENTLY, YET DETERMINEDLY GUIDING, INSPIRING AND LEADING THE WAY TOWARDS ADVANCING DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESS AND INCLUSION FOR SO MANY WHO HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN OR EXCLUDED. KATIE HAS SERVED THE UW AND iSCHOOL IN A VARIETY OF ROLES. FROM BEING A TEACHING ASSISTANT IN INFORMATICS CLASSES TO BEING A MENTOR IN THE UW DREAM PROJECT TO SERVING AS THE DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY EFFORTS FOR THE INFORMATICS UNDERGRADUATE ASSOCIATION (IUGA). SHE TRULY EPITOMIZES MSIM INFORMATION LEADERSHIP AND iSCHOOL VALUES. [APPLAUSE] >> I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE PROFESSOR JOSEPH TENNIS, ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR FACULTY AFFAIRS WILL PRESENT THIS YEAR'S TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARDS [APPLAUSE] >> GOOD AFTERNOON. EACH YEAR THE iSCHOOL RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO TEACHING MADE BY FACULTY. THROUGH THESE AWARDS THE SCHOOL SEEKS TO RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING EXAMPLES OF FACULTY TEACHING THAT EXEMPLIFY THE FOLLOWING: APPLIES EXPERTISE IN SUBJECT MATTER TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS AND MAKE TOPICS RELEVANT TO THEIR LEARNING. PEDAGOGICAL RECOGNITION OF OUR FACULTY THE PROF AWARD, WE TRIED. IS TO RECOGNIZE EXEMPLARY TEACHING AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO TEACHING MADE BY TENURE TRACK FACULTY AT THE INFORMATION SCHOOL. DOCTOR DR. MEGAN FINN. [APPLAUSE] DR. MEGAN FINN IS AN EXCEPTIONAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND TEACHER. AS ONE NOMINATOR SAYS, "MEGAN TAKES REALLY HEADY CONCEPTS THAT ARE HARD FOR STUDENTS TO COMPREHEND, DISTILLS THEM INTO MORE STRAIGHTFORWARD, MANAGEABLE PROJECTS, AND FORCES STUDENTS TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT THEMSELVES IN THE PROCESS. WE ARE SO EXCITED TO OFFER HER THIS AWARD. [APPLAUSE] TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND CREATIVE HONORS TEACH AWARD. AGAIN, WE TRIED. THE TEACH AWARD IS TO RECOGNIZE EXEMPLARY TEACHING AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO TEACHING MADE BY NON-TENURE TRACK LECTURING FACULTY (BOTH FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME) AT THE INFORMATION SCHOOL. SR. LECTURER ANNIE SEARLE. [APPLAUSE] ANNIE SEARLE IS AN OUTSTANDING INSTRUCTOR WHO CHALLENGES STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM. AS ONE NOMINATOR SAYS, "ANNIE IS A BADASS. SHE COMMANDS THE CLASSROOM WITH HER PRESENCE AND MADE MY FIRST TWO QUARTERS BACK IN SCHOOL EXTREMELY SATISFYING. I THINK HER ABILITY TO ENGAGE WITH EVERYONE IN THE CLASS ON A RANGE OF CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS IS A HALLMARK OF HER FINE ABILITY TO TEACH. SHE GOT US THINKING ABOUT OUR JOBS AND LIVES, WHAT WE WANTED TO DO AND HOW, MUCH MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN JUST LEARNING A TECHNICAL SKILL LIKE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES. ANNIE'S THE GOAT." WE ARE -- I HAD TO LOOK THAT UP. THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. WE ARE THRILLED TO OFFER HER THIS AWARD. [ APPLAUSE] >> AS MANY OF YOU KNOW THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON HAS BEEN USING THE SLOGAN "BE BOUNDLESS." IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE OUR CONVOCATION SPEAKER , XIAO WANG . CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF BOUNDLESS EMIGRATION USES TECHNOLOGY AND DATA TO HELP FAMILIES NAVIGATE MORE CONFIDENTLY, RAPIDLY AND AFFORDABLY THAN EVER BEFORE. BEFORE STARTING BOUNDLESS, XIAO WANG WAS AT AMAZON WHERE HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE OF AMAZON GO HE'S ALSO HELD LEADERSHIP ROLES AT PROVIDENCE EQUITY, AND MACKENZIE AND WAS THE DIRECTOR OF INNOVATION AND DESIGN FOR THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. HE HAS BEEN AROUND. XIAO WANG HOLDS A BACHELOR AND MASTERS IN ECONOMICS FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY. AND AN MBA FROM THE HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL. HE WAS BORN IN CHINA AND IMMIGRATED TO BOTHER WHEN HE WAS YOUNG, GRADUATING FROM ENGELMANN HIGH SCHOOL. HE IS THRILLED TO BE BACK IN SEATTLE WHERE HE LIVES WITH HIS WONDERFUL SPOUSE AND COCKER SPANIEL. HIS WORK AND LIFE EXPENSES GIVE HIM A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION. PARTICULARLY WITH IMMIGRANTS TO THE UNITED STATES. PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING , XIAO WANG. [ APPLAUSE] SO, I'M GOING TO GET THE BAD NEWS OUT OF THE WAY FIRST. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PAY OFF ALL OF YOUR STUDENT DEBTS. [LAUGHTER] I AM SO SORRY. YOU CAN ALL BLAME DEAN ANIND DAY FOR WATCHING TOO MANY EPISODES OF SILICON VALLEY. IN EXCHANGE , TODAY I WANT TO SHARE A FEW STORIES ABOUT MY JOURNEY THAT I HOPE WILL RESONATE WITH YOU AS YOU GO ON TO THIS NEXT EXCITING PHASE OF YOUR LIFE. MY FIRST STORY IS ABOUT DOING THE UNEXPECTED. ON PAPER, I GREW UP ACCORDING TO PLAN. I DID EVERYTHING YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO AS AN IMMIGRANT CHINESE KID. CLASSICAL PIANO, SCIENCE CLUB, MATH TEAM , MARCHING BAND, READING SAT PREP BOOKS FOR FUN. [LAUGHTER] THESE ARE ALL OF THE THINGS I AM SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT. WHAT MY PARENTS BRAGGED ABOUT. BUT, WHAT I WAS BEST AT AND WHAT LOVE TO DOING THE MOST WAS SELLING VACUUM CLEANERS. HOOVER'S, KEN MORES, BEAUTIFUL, EXPENSIVE DYSON'S . I WAS NAMED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH . MADE AN INCREDIBLE $13 PER HOUR AND WAS SO EXCITED TO SPEND EVERY WEEKEND AT SEARS, REST IN PEACE AT ALDERWOOD MALL. [LAUGHTER] THIS WAS NOT ACCORDING TO PLAN. MY FAMILY COULD NOT FATHOM WHY A 16 YEAR OLD ME WOULD HAVE A LOWLY RETAIL JOB . MY MOTHER WONDERED WHAT CONCERT HALLS I WOULD BE PLAYING OUT IF I DEDICATED ALL OF MY TIME TO MUSIC MY DAD LAMENTED I COULD BARELY REVERSE A STRING IN C++ , BUT WHAT MOTIVATED ME , WEEK AFTER WEEK WAS THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO SOLVE PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS EVERY TIME I WAS ON THE SALES FLOOR. I FOUND HIDDEN WAYS FOR WARRANTIES TO PAY FOR THEMSELVES THROUGH REPLACEMENT FILTERS. I FOUND RETURNED VACUUMS IN THE BACKROOM THAT WERE ON DISCOUNTS, THAT FAMILIES COULD AFFORD TO HAVE A CLEANER HOUSE. WHAT I LOVED MOST ABOUT THIS WAS I HAD THIS INCREDIBLE FEELING OF HAVING PURPOSE , AT WORK. THIS IS MY FIRST LESSON AROUND THE JOYS OF DOING SOMETHING UNEXPECTED. MY SECOND LESSON CULMINATED WHEN I BECAME THE LEAST LIKELY SPONSORED ATHLETE EVER. GROWING UP , I LOVE TO PLAY SPORTS. BUT, NOT ONLY WERE ASIAN KIDS NOT REALLY SUPPOSED TO PLAY SPORTS, I WAS AT 5'8", 140 POUNDS , NOT REALLY BUILT TO BE GOOD AT THEM. TO THE SURPRISE OF NO ONE, I WASN'T. [LAUGHTER] IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, I WAS CUT FROM THE BASEBALL TEAM FOR BEING TOO WEAK. I WAS CUT FROM THE SOCCER TEAM FOR BEING TOO SLOW. IN COLLEGE , I WAS CUT FROM THE ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM WHICH -- MANY PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW IS A SPORT. IT WASN'T UNTIL I DISCOVERED LONG DISTANCE RUNNING THAT I FOUND A NICHE THAT DID NOT REWARD TALENT , AS MUCH AS SHEER TOLERANCE OF BOREDOM AND PAIN. [LAUGHTER] SINCE I WAS USED TO THAT, I SLOWLY GOT BETTER. OVER TWO DECADES OF GRINDING , I WENT FROM BEING LAPPED IN THE 1600 METERS , TO PLACING IN THE TOP HUNDRED IN THE BOSTON AND CHICAGO MARATHON'S . I THEN FOUND TRIATHLONS WHICH REWARDS SLOW PEOPLE WHO LOVE SUFFERING EVEN MORE AND CULMINATED AND QUALIFIED FOR THE IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HAWAII , AND BEING SPONSORED BY WHEATIES, MICHELOB ULTRA AND OTHER COMPANIES. MY PARENTS WOULD WATCH ME STRUGGLE AT SPORTS, WHILE YOUNGER AND WOULD ALWAYS ASK, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? WHY NOT MUSIC OR ACADEMICS, OR SOMETHING YOU'RE ACTUALLY GOOD AT? I COULD NEVER ANSWER THAT QUESTION WHEN I WAS GROWING UP. I KNEW I WANTED TO KEEP AT IT FOR SOME REASON. IT WASN'T UNTIL LATER ON , IN LIFE, THAT I UNDERSTAND THE ANSWER. MY WIFE, OR BRUTE FORCING MY WAY INTO BEING SOMETHING I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT , IS BECAUSE OF WHAT MY PARENTS NEVER HAD. MY PARENTS CHILDHOOD WAS INTERRUPTED BY THE CHINESE PATROL REVOLUTION. WHILE THEY WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN ALL OF THE SCHOOLS AND SENT THE CHILDREN INTO FARMS AND FACTORIES. WHILE THERE, MY PARENTS STUDIED EVERY NIGHT WITH BLACK-MARKET TEXTBOOKS SEVENTH GRADE THROUGH COLLEGE. AFTER FINISH A FULL GRADE OF -- DAY OF WORK IN THE FIELDS THEY WOULD SECRETLY LIKE CANDLES AND WORK ON PROBLEM SETS ON THEIR OWN, NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, CLINGING TO THE HOPE THAT SCHOOLS WILL EVENTUALLY OPEN. WHEN THEY DID, THEY TESTED DIRECTLY INTO MASTERS PROGRAMS. EVENTUALLY THE GOVERNMENT ALLOWED PEOPLE TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY, AND THEY GAVE UP EVERYTHING TO IMMIGRATE TO AMERICA. THEY ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT THE BEST EDUCATION , AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR ME , WERE HERE. WHAT THEY FAILED TO REALIZE WAS HOW DIFFICULT IT WOULD BE TO BREAK INTO THE CORPORATE LADDER. I WATCH MY DAD WITH TWO MASTERS DEGREES BE UNDERPAID, AND DO MENIAL WORK BECAUSE HE WAS WAITING FOR HIS GREEN CARD AND CANNOT LEAVE HIS COMPANY. I WATCH MY MOM , WITH A PHD, BEING STUCK IN A GROUP WITH OTHER IMMIGRANTS WITH NO HOPE OF ADVANCEMENT. I SAW BOTH OF THEM WORKED TIRELESSLY , YEAR AFTER YEAR, TO LEARN NEW PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES BECAUSE THEY KNEW THEY COULD NEVER BREAK INTO MANAGEMENT , SO THEY HAD TO KEEP UP AND CONTINUALLY COMPETE WITH NEW GRADUATES FOR TECHNICAL JOBS. IN SOME WAY, I COULD SEE THAT SAME PATH IN FRONT OF ME , IF I WERE TO DO WHAT WAS EXPECTED. TO STAY QUIET, STUDY HARD . I WAS TOLD REPEATEDLY GROWING UP THAT IF I, AND THE WHITE PERSON, WOULD BE UP FOR THE SAME POSITION I WOULD DO WAS LOSE. I DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. I JOINED MARKETING AND BUSINESS CLUBS. I WORKED THROUGH SCHOOL. I DID SPORTS. I LOOKED AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO DO THINGS WHEN NO ONE ELSE LOOK LIKE ME, I LOOK FOR AFFIRMATION FOR BEING GOOD AT SOMETHING ASIAN PEOPLE WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT. IN DOING SO, I GAINED THE CONFIDENCE TO RISE ABOVE THE BAMBOO CEILING OF A SMART, HARD-WORKING DR., LAWYER, OR ENGINEER THAT I SAW OTHERS IN MY COMMUNITY ASPIRING FOR. OVER TIME , THAT BECAME MY WIFE. BECOMING GOOD AT THINGS I WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT , MADE ME FEEL LIKE I HAD OPPORTUNITIES MY PARENTS COULD NEVER HAVE A SHOT AT. THERE IS THAT WHY IN EACH OF YOU. THE REASON WHY YOU WORK THAT MUCH HARDER . DO THAT EXTRA BIT OF EFFORT. TAKE INFORMATION FOR 41, EVEN THOUGH NO ONE WAKES UP AND SAYS I CANNOT WAIT TO DEBUG SOME INFRASTRUCTURE CODE. OR, POUR YOUR NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS INTO YOUR GRADUATE CAPSTONE EVEN THOUGH IT IS PASS/FAIL . RIGHT? [LAUGHTER] SORRY IF THAT WAS TOO CLOSE TO HOME. [LAUGHTER] [ APPLAUSE ] WHEN YOU ARE GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND AND LOVING IT, THERE IS USUALLY A WHY THERE. FIND IT, ARTICULATE IT AND CALL UPON IT WHEN NEEDED. IT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER AND WILL KEEP YOU GOING AND OTHERS GIVE UP. LOOKING BACK AT MY CAREER , IT WAS ALSO A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN THE THREE RING DIAGRAM ; CASH, CAREER -- CACHES FOR THE FLEXIBILITY OF DOING WHATEVER I WANTED TO DO. CAREER IS SOMETHING TOUGHER THAN MY SKILLS ON POSITION, MAKING A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. BECAUSE I CAN ONLY GET ONE , ALMOST TWO IN ANY JOB I AVERAGED LESS THAN TWO YEARS PER POSITION. WHILE I WAS HAPPY WITH EACH OF THESE DECISIONS, IT ALWAYS FELT LIKE I WAS JUST LAYING THE GROUNDWORK . ADDING SKILLS AND TOOLS TO MY BELT SO EVENTUALLY I CAN APPLY EVERYTHING I LEARNED TO WHAT I WAS MEANT TO DO. ALL OF THIS TIME I HAD BEEN THINKING ABOUT STARTING AND RUNNING A COMPANY. EACH TIME WHETHER I WAS HELPING TEACHERS SHARE LESSON PLANS OR AN ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR WOMEN ABOUT TO GET MARRIED , WHICH IS A GREAT IDEA , BY THE WAY, DON'T FEEL IT. I NEVER TRULY COMMITTED AS THE PROBLEMS DID NOT FEEL LIKE IT'S SOMETHING I HAD TO SOLVE. ABSOLUTELY NEEDED TO NOT EXIST ANYMORE. THAT WAS UNTIL IN 2016, I MET SOMEONE, WHO SPENT OVER $12,000 ON AN IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY FOR HER GREEN CARD APPLICATIONS AND STILL HAD A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. WHILE I ALWAYS KNEW IMMIGRATION WAS COMPLEX AND EXPENSIVE , I WAS BLOWN AWAY THAT SOMEHOW IN THE 30 YEARS SINCE I CAME TO THIS COUNTRY , THE ONLY THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED IS THAT THE PROCESS IS NOW MORE COMPLICATED AND THE ATTORNEY FEES HAVE GOTTEN HIGHER. WITH SURPRISE I STARTED ASKING WHY ? I TALKED TO HUNDREDS OF IMMIGRANTS, LAWYERS, POLICY EXPERTS AND REALIZE THE IMMIGRATION PROCESS IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE THIS IS AN IMMIGRATION PROBLEM. THERE'S TWO GROUPS OF PEOPLE THAT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MAKING IT MORE COMPLICATED AND THEN YOU HAVE IMMIGRATION ATTORNEYS WHO FINANCIALLY BENEFIT FROM THIS COMPLEXITY. IT BLEW MY MIND THAT AN ERA OF UNLIMITED INFORMATION AT OUR FINGERTIPS THAT THIS HUGE INFORMATION GAP CAN STILL EXIST. MY PARENTS AND I CAME OVER FROM CHINA IN 1989 WE SPENT NEARLY FIVE MONTHS OF RENT MONEY ON AN IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY BECAUSE WE JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE ARE DOING IT RIGHT AND THE STAKES ARE SO HIGH. MILLIONS OF FAMILIES TODAY ARE FACING THE SAME TRAGIC TRADE- OFFS AND I FELT UNACCEPTABLE. FOR THE FIRST TIME I FOUND SOMETHING THAT TRULY MATTERED. IF SUCCESSFUL WOULD MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF FAMILIES. JUST AS IMPORTANTLY I FELT LIKE I WAS ACTUALLY READY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE . EVERYTHING I HAD PREVIOUSLY DONE FROM SELLING THE FIRST VACUUM CLEANER TO WORKING IN THE GOVERNMENT, TO LAUNCHING NEW TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS HAS SET ME UP, AT THIS MOMENT, TO TACKLE THIS PROBLEM. FOR THE FIRST TIME, IN MY LIFE, I COULD HIT ALL THREE CIRCLES AND I DIAGRAM IS JUST AS IMPORTANT , FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY CAREER, I COULD BE CAPABLE OF SOLVING THAT PROBLEM SUCCESSFULLY. IT'S THE CULMINATION OF ALL OF MY EXPERIENCES THAT MADE THIS WORK. TODAY I LEAD A COMPANY THAT IS EMPOWERING FAMILIES TO NAVIGATE THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM MORE CONFIDENTLY , RAPIDLY AND AFFORDABLY THAN EVER BEFORE. EVERY MONTH, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES BEGIN THEIR APPLICATIONS WITH US. SO FAR OUR COMPANY, I'M PROUD TO SAY HAS 100% APPROVAL RATING FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. [APPLAUSE] THE NEW YORK TIMES CITED OUR STARTUP AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE WHEN TECHNOLOGISTS USE THE POWER CIRCUIT. I REALLY OBJECT TO ENTREPRENEURS TELLING THE JUST SO STORIES THAT YOU HEAR AND READ ALL OF THE TIME IN THE MEDIA . THEIR LIFE IS PLANNED, SET UP AND THEN SUCCESS. THE TRUTH IS , FOR THE FIRST 10 YEARS OF MY CAREER I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP. THAT WAS JUST FINE. SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE . THAT IS AMAZING , AND I AM INCREDIBLY JEALOUS. MOST OF YOU ARE PROBABLY LIKE ME . NOT HAVING MANY INTERESTS , NOT SURE WHAT YOU WANT. I WANT TO TELL YOU TODAY, EMPHATICALLY , THAT THAT IS OKAY. SAY YES TO INTERESTING OPPORTUNITIES . LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO MAKE MONEY, IT FREES YOU UP TO TAKE YOUR RISKS. TRYING TO ALWAYS HIT THAT BULL'S-EYE ON YOUR OWN DIAGRAM EVERY TIME WILL MORE LIKELY LEAVE YOU LESS SATISFIED . INSTEAD, KNOW WHICH TRADE-OFF YOU'RE MAKING OVER HOW LONG YOU'RE WILLING TO MAKE IT FOR. WHEN THAT RIGHT OPPORTUNITY COMES ALONG , YOU WILL KNOW. MORE IMPORTANTLY BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. SINCE I DO NOT HAVE KIDS YET, THIS IS MY ONE GLORIOUS OPPORTUNITY TO BE A TIGER DAD . JUST LIKE MY PARENTS HAD CLEAR EXPECTATIONS FOR ME, I'M NOT GOING TO APPLY THOSE SAME HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR YOU. NO MATTER WHICH PATH YOU CHOOSE , YOU ALL HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THOSE AROUND YOU. WE ARE AT A CRITICAL. IN OUR COUNTRY'S HISTORY. A GENERATION AGO YOU HAD A 90% CHANCE OF BEING BETTER OFF THAN YOUR PARENTS. NOW IT IS A COIN FLIP. THE GAP BETWEEN THE HAVES AND HAVE-NOTS HAVE NEVER BEEN HIGHER. AMERICA'S INCOME INEQUALITY NOW RANKS BETWEEN QATAR, AND CAMEROON AND AFRICAN DICTATORSHIP. HERE'S THE DIRTY SECRET. YOU WILL ALL BE FINE. YOU HAVE HAD THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY , AT THE ISCHOOL TO LEARN FROM TEACHERS WHO TRULY AND UP -- DEEPLY CARE ABOUT YOU. YOU HAVE PICKED AN INCREDIBLE DEGREE PROGRAM . WITH HIGH CERTAINTY , YOU WILL ALL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. MY PARENTS NEVER HAD THAT CHOICE. THEIR PATH WAS SET FOR THEM . WHETHER BY THE COMMUNIST PARTY, OR TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES AS IMMIGRANTS IN IN AMERICA. BUT YOU, LIKE I, HAVE THAT CHOICE. IN A WORLD WHERE TECHNOLOGY CAN BE SO POWERFUL AND YET IS BEING USED TO SOLVE SUCH MENIAL OR PRIVILEGED ISSUES YOU CAN ALL DECIDE ON WHAT PROBLEMS YOU WANT TO WORK OUT. LOOK AROUND THIS ROOM. ALL AROUND YOU OR YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS , SUPPORTERS , TEACHERS, PEOPLE WHO HAVE PUT ENDLESS HOURS TO GET YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE THIS CHOICE TO DO SOMETHING UNEXPECTED . DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL. DO IT DELIBERATELY. AS THE POET MARY OLIVER SAYS, "WHAT IS IT THAT YOU PLAN TO DO WITH YOUR ONE WILD AND PRECIOUS LIFE?." CONGRATULATIONS ON EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR . I CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS DOWN THE ROAD. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING OUR SPEAKER TODAY FOR INSPIRING OUR GRADUATES AND SERVING AS A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR ALL OF US TO USE OUR POSITIONS OF MAKE GOOD CHOICES TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE WORLD .
